Freedom has its ups & downs. It’s good decades & bad decades. It is what it is, which is to say the best system of governance ever conceived, however; this doesn’t negate the fact that this freedom must be used wisely, lest we forget to avoid becoming the monsters we detest. Our freedom comes at a cost; we must, as individuals, decide our own fate, our own course. That decision won’t be made for us.
On this day we recognize that freedom allows for poor decision making. It allows for the ignorant and ill-informed to perform truly heinous acts of evil; it allows them to wallow in the mistakes of their forefathers, to take pride in something that is not theirs, and to fight tooth and nail for total regression in the guise of progress or “survival”.
It is our duty, as people who are aware of the dangers and responsibilities freedom ensues, to make sure that the general public is made aware of these facts, and to make sure that this sort of behavior doesn’t occur again.
Republics are particularly volatile political structures, and while America has done an incredible job of maintaining their own, they can only survive so much.
Be smart, be reasonable, and don’t lose sight of what freedom is really about: making what you will of it.
